Abbey

Abbey

Abbey's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female-spayed, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 6/1/2009

-- She's for real!

Weekend after weekend, Abbey was brought to PAWS from her foster home, but all anyone saw was a lump in the back corner of a cage. Presumably, somebody named Abbey was buried beneath the motionless bedding, but the only way you could tell was to peer under the bed into a pair of terrified eyes. Not even her braver foster housemates could give her the courage to move. Being difficult for volunteers to work with Abbey when the Center was open, it was decided that she should stay at PAWS.

So then we had a lump in one of the Sunroom enclosures! But it was easier to lift the bedding just enough to begin talking softly and stroking this fearful cat. She tried her best to inch away, enwrapped in her "cocoon", and for a couple of weeks, nobody really knew what Abbey looked like! Our first clue that she was moving about....sometime....was that, since the cage doors in this room remain open, we began seeing the lump in different enclosures.

Metamorphosis! The butterfly flies! Out of the blue and to the utter disbelief of our volunteer trainer giving trainees a tour, suddenly there was Abbey....out in the room, mingling with her roomies and coming up to greet the visitors! Are you sure it wasn't Minnie you saw? Nope, definitely Abbey...she's for real! Since that remarkable night, Abbey and Minnie have become best friends, touring the room together, exchanging friendly swats now and then, but rubbing against each other and head bumping soon after. Abbey continues to greet visitors - she especially looks forward to visits from her "pet partner" - and wants pets. She loves to play with wand toys and chases the laser dot. Although still a little unsure at times, Abbey has shed her cocoon at last and we see her confidence building every day. Oh, did we say....Abbey's a very pretty girl!

Adrian

Adrian

Adrian's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female-spayed, Domestic mediumhair
DOB: 7/1/2010

* Shy and somewhat cautious
* Seeks attention on her terms
* Playful
* Will do best in a quiet home
* Good with dogs and other cats

Although little more than a kitten herself, pretty Adrian arrived at PAWS "with kitten" and two weeks later became mom to a family of four. Despite foster mom's best efforts to save them, all but Elijah passed on to the Rainbow Bridge shortly after birth, leaving poor Elijah (see bio below) an only child. :( Having had to fend for herself for we don't know how long, Adrian was and remains timid; but now living at the Center and seeing numerous people every day, she is slowly gaining confidence and courage. She seems to enjoy attention even when she doesn't initiate it, and she's finding a "cat dancer" fleece wand most intriguing! Given time and a little patience, this lovely girl will make a wonderful companion.

Bear & Butterfly

Bear & Butterfly's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Bear, M-neutered, Domestic shorthair
Butterfly, F, Domestic mediumhair
DOB: 8/27/2011

Bear and Butterfly were found with a small dog crate and some food on a road leading to a hunting camp. Within two weeks of her arrival at PAWS, Butterfly found her forever home. Poor Bear wonders where in the world she went and why he's left all alone! :( Bear can be a cuddle bug when he's done exploring, running and climbing. Wear him out and he'll be happy to sleep on a lap, belly or chest. Foster mom tells us he's getting better about being picked up, but he's still a little unsure about his feet leaving the floor, so please be gentle! :)

Bear is featured in the photo.

D.O.B. 11/1/11

ADOPTED 8/20/12

Boots

Boots

Boots' Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, front-declawed, Domestic shorthair

Don't be surprised to find Boots all dressed up in his tuxedo but hunkered down in his litterbox when you visit him at the Center! He will greet you with a low growl which does NOT translate "I'm a mean guy", but rather "I'm scared to death, I don't like this place, and I really don't understand why I have to come here every weekend!" Boots is just one of so many cats who are intimidated by new environments but are just the opposite at home.

In his foster home, Boots is friendly and affectionate. Brother to Socks (see below), he is the "alpha" of the two siblings and Socks' port in the storm. He is well-behaved (always uses his litterbox, never tries to get out of the house), enjoys playing with toys and, believe it or not, is a lap cat! And he enjoys sleeping in foster dad's bed at night with his sister. Boots hasn't had any problem in his limited experience with children. For Socks' sake, probably moreso than for Boots, we'd like to see this brother/sister combo find a home together. Ignore the growl, folks - it's all for show. :)

Candy

Candy

Candy's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female-spayed, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 6/1/2011

Sweet as candy is affection-loving, lap kitten Candy....a real "people's cat".   Candy's got a pretty round face with a white throat and mittens.  She holds her tail almost as high as her foster brother, folk singer Paul!  Candy has no litter box issues, uses her scratching posts, and so far, doesn't climb on tables and counters. Good girl! When she's been disciplined (typically for bullying one of the smaller kittens), she automatically goes to her room, giving herself a time out!  Candy might do best as a single so her love and affection could be directed solely to her human family, but she'll do fine with an older kitten and probably with older children.

Cleo

Cleo

Cleo's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female-spayed, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 7/10/2009

Cleo is a loving cat but she is easily stressed. She showed up on the back porch of her now foster family's home in Feb. of 2010 and they thought she was a kitten.  She was a little girl alright - weighing in at just 4 lbs. at the time. But surprise, surprise! The family's vet estimated her to be at least old enough to be....YIKES....pregnant! "Kitten" Cleo delivered 4 kittens of her own in April 2010!

Cleo appears to have been severely traumatized at some point in her life and continues to have a high level of anxiety. She was starving when she arrived at her rescuers' home. Eating for 5, it turns out, she would eat anything and everything.

Cleo is a verbal cat and her verbalizing takes the form of growling and hissing when she's at the Center.  She does that at home only if she's startled. She seems to have an aversion to other cats, and the noise, activity and host of strange people approaching her at the Center makes it the last place on earth she wants to be. But bribe Cleo with food, says the Shelter Manager, and she'll be your instant friend! Cleo is a beautiful cat. What she needs most is a quiet, mature home of her own and food, Food, FOOD. :) Please give Cleo a chance.....kitties who have had rough beginnings come to appreciate the good life and most often turn into real sweethearts.

Daisy

Daisy's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female-spayed, Domestic shorthair

D.O.B. 5/01/08

This petite green-eyed Daisy needs lots of TLC to help her blossom!

Daisy is a shy but affectionate girl. If you approach her slowly and quietly, she will rub her head against your hand, but sudden movements and noises still alarm her. Coax Daisy with gentle word and she will extend her chin for you to rub. You may even hear a low, rumbling purr. Daisy is a social eater. She enjoys being talked to and petted while she nibbles away....accommodate her and you've found a really good way to build her trust! Let Daisy come to you rather than forcing yourself on her. And if you must pick her up, do it while she is next to you on the couch rather than picking her up from on the floor. Although she "gets along" with other cats at the Center, she gets along by retreating or ignoring them. Daisy needs a quiet, patient, adult home and would be happiest as your only cat.

Eagles Nest Kittens

Eagles Nest Kittens

Eagles Nest Kittens' Bio at the Time of Adoption:

DOB: 4/25/2011

Delany - Female-spayed, Domestic mediumhair
Arlette - Female-spayed, Domestic mediumhair
Arnold - Male-neutered, Domestic shorthair

These three delightful kittens started life "flyin' high." But unfortunately, although kittens can learn to do many things, FLYING is not on the list! Their story:

Arnold was the first of the kittens to discover he is not a bird. When he was just 4-5 weeks old, he fell out of the side of an old building in a Bellefonte alley! Mom had found a great hiding place for her babies in the eaves, but it was not a good place when the kittens started to wander about...the hole in the building was 2 1/2 stories up. A few days later, Arlette fell out of the 'nest', and Delaney was found a couple of weeks later. Former PAWS kitty "Steelers" is thought to be another sibling, and two more, sadly, died from falling. :( A 7th kitten was placed by her rescuers.

Super-friendly, purr machine Arnold was adopted in November, so we'll focus on the girls.

Arlette is a little more reserved than her brother but is extremely affectionate and loves to be held. She LOVES to play and 'hunt' her toys and is quite acrobatic. A tremendous leaper, she'll jump very high when she wants something. Once you find Arlette's 'sweet spot', she'll lie with her belly exposed, legs outstretched, and her little tongue will come out when you scratch her in just the right way. :)

Delaney, the last kitten to be rescued, was very scared and cowered away from the others at first. But it was clear from watching Arnold and Arlette romp, play and tussle with each other...that she wanted in on the action! So one day, she just dove right in and became one of the gang. Delaney was like the awkward little sister who just wanted to be included...so she didn't stay shy long.

One lovely, sweet and very lucky kitten left. Ms. Arlette is just waiting to fly into a home of her own.

(In the photo, Delaney is on the left, Arlette on the right).

ADOPTED 11/9/11 - Arnold

ADOPTED 1/30/12 - Delany

Elijah

Elijah

Elijah's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 6/18/2011

* Playful, full of energy
* Enjoys rough-housing with foster brothers and sisters
* Good with other cats when properly introduced

Hello everyone - I'm Elijah, the only remaining child of my lovely mom, Adrian. I never really got to know my sister and brothers and that makes me sad. But I've had plenty of other "kids" to play with in my foster home, and I really enjoy a good romp! Foster mom says I'm ALL kitten......whatever exactly that means. Guess part of it is that I don't stay still very long. Too much to do and, of course, one of my jobs is to entertain my human and her friends and family! Do introduce me slowly to other cats, though. I kinda march to the beat of my own drum, so the others need time to get to know me and me them. I really miss my mom now that she's been adopted, but I guess I was being awfully clingy and anyway, it was time for me to grow up. Hey, I'm doin' okay, but now I need to find a home of my own...having another kitten or two who like to play would be ideal. -- Elijah

Famous Cats kittens

Famous Cats kittens

Famous Cats kittens' Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Hello Kitty - Female-spayed
Morris - Male-neutered
Felix - Male-neutered
Sylvester - Male-neutered
Mooch -Male-neutered

All Domestic Shorthair, grey/black tabbies
D.O.B. 4/5/2011

If you're a cartoon fan, these kitties will call up fun and familiar images, many of them taking you back to Saturday mornings in front of the TV. Our "famous kittens" started out anything but famously.....on the contrary, they were abandoned in a cardboard box outside a local business....no laughing matter and, just for the record, a violation of the law.

Hello Kitty, whose namesake's delightful image appears on almost every product imaginable, is a sweet little girl, the only girl among the "famous" ones. She's quite shy, but when she's petted, her purr box starts immediately and quickly reaches full volume. She loves to play and wrestle with the others and would prefer being adopted into a family with other kitties.

Our Morris looks nothing like the famous "mascot" of 9-Lives brand foods. And our guy might renege on doing photo shoots....he's a little shy and would prefer to stand back and observe. It will take a little time and patience for Morris to warm up to you, but he will. Likewise, Felix and Sylvester....this in contrast to their "puddy tat" namesakes who seem to be in total control (until Tweety Bird comes along). :) But all three are friendly and playful. They'd probably do best in quiet, adult homes.

Mooch of the Mutts comic strip often would prefer to stay to himself and play with his little pink sock. Not our Mooch! Mooch is the most outgoing of our "famous ones". He seeks attention from the person who would be his "Millie" and purrrrrrrrs like mad. Like all of his brothers and his sister, Mooch gets along with everyone.

Adopt a "Famous Kitten" - pick your favorite!

Featured in the photo is Felix (left) & Mooch (right).

Figment

Figment

Figment's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, Domestic shorthair w/stub tail
DOB: 4/2/2011

* Very affectionate
* Likes being held
* Loves laser play
* Lives with a dog and other cats

Figment is the last of the cats in the 13 cat rescue to be secured. His rescuers really were hoping he was a figment of their imaginations! But he wasn't, and turns out he's a really nice guy....playful, attention-seeking, enjoys a lap, and fits in well with all the others in the household. Figment's tail was very badly injured when he was trapped and unfortunately, the docs were not able to save it. So...Figment is what one veterinarian likes to call a "manufactured Manx." :) Not having his tail doesn't bother Figment at all.....as he found out so painfully, the darned things just get in the way anyhow!

ADOPTED 3/18/12

Flame

Flame

Flame's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 1/1/2003

Flame is a handsome gentleman of a cat. Oh, he may emit a barely audible growl after you've been petting him for awhile. Don't know if he's saying, "Thank you for paying attention to me", or "Thanks, but that's enough for now." Discretion being the better part of valor, we assume the latter and come back a little later.

We don't know a lot about Flame's history and he remains a bit of a mystery. Although he gets along with the other cats at the Adoption Center, he's an independent fellow who prefers to stay to himself. Relaxed and non-assertive, friendly and affectionate are words his previous fosters used to describe him. He enjoys following the laser dot and looks forward to sitting quietly by the window on sunny days. Flame has a bit of arthritis so you'll notice that often there's a bit of stiffness in his walk. Other times he chases that laser dot like a kitten!

Flame would be happiest in a quiet home...another cat or even a laid-back dog okay, but not so many other pets that Flame just gets lost in the crowd or disappears into the shadows. Being the center of attention may open up a whole new world to this gentleman cat and ultimately reveal who's behind those beautiful golden eyes. Will you be the one to give Flame his day in the sun?

YES!

Gus

Gus

Gus' Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 5/18/2011

GUS? How'd one of the Gobbler's Knob kitties come to be named Gus? There's no Gus in Punxsutawney....at least as far as we know. Truth is, after Winter (who hasn't come to the Center yet), we ran out of theme names. So as not to go too far afield from the theme, we named this boy after the second most famous groundhog in PA....Gus, the "spokesgroundhog" for the Pennsylvania Lottery! (Don't know why Pennsylvanians seem to have this "thing" for groundhogs)! :) Unlike the scruffy-looking PA Lottery fella, kitten Gus is a wide-eyed, very good-looking guy. And unlike lottery Gus, whose mantra is "keep on scratchin'!" (your instant scratch-off lottery ticket, that is), kitten Gus better not be scratchin'...at least not anything but his approved scratchers. But Gus and Gus ARE the same in that they're both lookin' to get lucky....our guy, of course, wanting to find his special lifetime home. Like some of his siblings, Gus is a little shy, but he likes to play, is fine with other animals, and given time will learn to trust those human animals who love him, welcome him into their hearts.....and control the laser dot.

Hannah Banana

Hannah Banana

Hannah Banana's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female-spayed, Domestic shorthair

DOB: 5/1/2009

Winter break at PAWS is always a good time to get updates from our fosters, and Hannah B's foster provides wonderful new insight into this interesting kitty. To back up a bit, though, a piece of history.

Just a young kitten, Hannah was being severely tormented and abused when she was rescued and brought to PAWS. Having no trust in humans, she was pretty aggressive at first, but after lots of one-on-one, she overcame her people fears and is now a playful and loveable girl. Hannah is a vocal kitty and enjoys good conversation. At the Center, she loves to hide in high places, then teases you by reaching out with a swat to get you to play. She's good with other cats, and enjoys spending fresh-air time with Harry on the porch....when it isn't too cold. :) But now, from foster mom:

"So far I've found Hannah to be an excellent house guest. She loves the dogs, naps with them on the couch and even plays with my youngest when she's in the mood! She loves to lie on my lap while I work on the computer or watch TV....whenever you're sedentary she'll keep your lap warm! Hannah lets you know when she's hungry and meows for attention. You do have to be careful because she loves to dash for the door, mostly I think, wanting to romp in the yard with the dogs. She shows polite curiosity in Bob, the bird, but never bothers him. As for the house plants....an earlier bio cautioned re: Hannah B and plants. But I have TONS and she never touches them! Sometimes she likes to sleep in the dirt of my biggest pot but she never potties in them or eats the leaves. She loves her kitty carrier and walks in willingly! Now how many cats do THAT? Hannah Banana is one of the most adaptable cats I've ever met. We just moved, and within five minutes of coming to the new house, she was playing in the sink and strolling around like she owned the place."

You want a fun, comical kitty who's getting sweeter every day , come meet Hannah B!

Harry

Harry

Harry's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, Domestic Shorthair

DOB: 06/01/04

What's not to love about a cat named "Harry"?

Harry is a loving and friendly guy with a small notch in one ear. How he got "notched" we have no idea and he's not tellin'.

Had we not already had a PAWS kitty named Harrington (one of the kittens named after computer fonts), this would have been the perfect "formal" name for Harry. Harry loves the computer in the Cattery....he not only finds it fascinating, but he's convinced that whoever may be working there needs his help. He sure can call up some pretty strange stuff! But he's accommodating when you give him a good full body rub and ask him to go "help" somebody else for awhile.

Update from Harry's holiday foster - January 2011

Harry was warm and loving, purred a lot, sought out my lap and loved sleeping on the bed. He ate well.....but complained it was not enough! Harry likes to chase catnip balls, but his favorite is shoestrings. He listens when told to get down (off the table, etc.). Occasionally he would put his teeth on me, but he never hurt me. I think he was telling me to stop petting. Like any other cat, he needs a scratching post or two so he doesn't use wooden cupboards...hint, hint...get him something that has at least some bare wood surface since that seems to be his preference. If you get a newspaper, keep it away from Harry! He likes to rip it up and spit the pieces out...a commentary on the news? :) Shreds plastic bags too.

You gotta love the guy named "Harry"!

James, Male-neutered, DMH
Siegfried, Male-neutered, DMH
Tristan, Male-neutered, DMH
Debbie, Female-spayed, DMH
Helen, Female, DMH
Ginny, Female-spayed, DMH

Named after English country veterinarian and bestselling storyteller, James Herriot ("Every Living Thing," "All Creatures Great and Small" and many others), these 6 dear kittens have been scooped up so fast, only little Ginny (named for one of the Herriots' cats) is still available. As a group, these kittens are confident, outgoing, people-oriented and talkative (their mom is a Siamese mix)! Although already adopted, for the record:

The boys:
James - an active fellow, plays hard but wants to be held
Siegfried - VERY talkative, a nuzzler, always wants love
Tristan - the biggest in size and personality, already a lap cat

The girls:
Debbie- the quietest, finds a cozy nook for napping while the others are playing
Helen - wants attention, loves to be held and cuddled
Ginny - the smallest "Herriot", but could hold her own when playing with her bigger brothers

Ginny is already feeling pretty lonely without those bigger guys, Debbie gone too, and Helen on her way out the door. Don't miss out on these very special 6 kids....you've got one last chance!

Jules

Jules

Jules' Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 8/1/2010

Hey everybody - ever hear about cats who've been trained to use their people's commode? Bet you never met one....or even believed it was true. Well, I'm one of those cats! Of course, I haven't had a chance to prove it to the PAWS people, seeing as how I'm now living in their "cattery". No people's potty here for me to demonstrate my prowess. :( I also used to ride in the back seat of the car like a dog and, like a dog, I'd come when my family whistled for me. Dunno, maybe I'm a dog in cat's fur? The back seat adventures, I'm told, probably are not a safe way to transport me, so my new family really needs to put me in a carrier....sigh.

My family had several kids and I just loved them. In fact, I'm a real lover boy period. I love everybody, don't mind being held and carried around, am a great family cat. So why am I back at PAWS (I was adopted from here as a kitten)? Well, the problem was that when my family opened the door to let the kids out, I wanted to go along! Because I succeeded several times, and even though I'd come back when they whistled, we lived on a VERY dangerous thoroughfare.....people in State College know it as Atherton Street. This is no place for a cat for even two minutes, and my people were terrified that I'd get hurt...or worse. Because they loved me so much, they weren't willing to take that chance. So.....here I am, looking for a new person or family who wants a very smart, loving fellow, but someone who stands a better chance of keeping me safely inside. You can also test me out on your potty, see if I remember! But that's not necessary if it doesn't appeal to you. I can use a litterbox just fine. :) -- Jules

July Johnson

July Johnson

July Johnson's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 5/19/2011

July Johnson, better known as "JJ", is the last of the kittens named for characters in the TV series "Lonesome Dove". JJ is a very sweet and affectionate kitty who won't stop loving you!  He's a lap cat, loves to be carried, is playful and enjoys running around the house with the rest of the kittens.  Because he's very food-oriented, one of his bad habits is to search for goodies on the counters or tabletop!  Foster mom assures us that he's very well fed and often gets treats, so the "counter thing" is something that still needs work. Oh Tannenbaum -- JJ is the first cat ever in the fosters' experience who climbed the Christmas tree....and loved standing on his hind legs to swat at ornaments just out of his reach. Mr. Mischief will sometimes knock something off a table and just watch with glee as it drops to the floor. Ah, kittens...a timeout sometimes is in order, not because he's been a bad cat, but to give foster mom a break!

JJ's got good litter box habits and uses his sisal rope scratching posts. He loves to nap with his person or in a cubby hole high on the cat tree. He also loves to "help" foster mom at the computer keyboard, but is eventually content to snuggle in the cat tree next to the desk. JJ chirps gently when he wants attention.....which is all the time. :) He does well with other cats, young and old, and would probably do well with children. Don't know about dogs 'cause he's never met one, but he's confident enough that with proper introduction, he'd probably be fine. Looking for a typically mischievous, but very loving, adaptable kitten? Come meet JJ!

Little Women

Little Women

Little Women's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Domestic shorthair
DOB: 4/25/11

Meg, F-spayed
Jo, F-spayed
Beth, F-spayed
John, M-neutered

These four cuties were named after the four March sisters in Louisa May Alcott's 19th Century "coming-of-age" novel "Little Women." They are Meg March, Jo March, Beth March and....John? Wait a minute....what's with John? Where's Amy? Oh well, we thought we had an Amy March but what are ya gonna do? Sometimes it's really hard to tell when they're SO little. If our recollection is correct, one of the sisters married a John, so we haven't strayed entirely from our storyline.

The little women (and John) are quite tiny for their age, but they're healthy and doing their best to catch up.  They love the special canned food they get to help them grow.  Full of energy, they run through the house and play hide and seek in the little tent their foster mom has given them.  Unfortunately, it's too large to put in their enclosure at PAWS.  Stalking and pouncing are also high on their list of things to do.  Maybe their new families will be able to give them something to hide in?  A cardboard box just might do the trick!

Come see these great little women and one great little gent. :)

Featured in the photo is Beth.

Meghann

Meghann

Meghann's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female-spayed, Domestic shorthair

DOB: 6/1/2004

"She's an angel, extremely affectionate and cuddly. A beautiful kitty with an equally beautiful personality who would do very nicely in a quiet home."

"Meghann is a sweetheart. She was very gentle with two small kids today, and she let me pick her up and carry her. She had the sweetest look on her face after the family left and the Dad was looking at her through the window...the two of them were making eyes at each other."

"Meghann is a sweet, kind cat who loves attention!!"

These are some of the things our volunteers have to say about Meghann. So what's an angel of a cat like Meghann doing at PAWS? We don't know whether she was lost or abandoned, but a couple who had just moved to SC the weekend before Memorial Day found her in their backyard. She was alone and seemed to have nowhere to go. Sadly, the couple was threatened with eviction if they took her in, and despite their efforts and ours, no one ever came forward to claim her.

When she first came to PAWS, Meghann was quite stressed, but after a few reiki sessions, soft words and gentle pats (she especially loves company while she eats), Meghann is a different kitty. She sometimes will give little love bites if you stop petting and she hasn't had quite enough!

No one mentioned a purr, but she has one....a soft, gentle rumble that's befitting of a gentle, affectionate girl. Meghann is ready for a home of her own....one where she won't end up getting lost or abandoned ever again! If you're looking for an angel, you must meet Meghann.

Mimi

Mimi

Mimi's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female-spayed, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 5/2/2010

For awhile, we didn't have many up-close-and-personal insights into Mimi to pass along. Although we do now, her heart-warming story, as told by the gentleman who rescued her, is still a MUST READ in its entirety. Our thanks to Professor C. for caring....and for sharing.

Mimi - A Biography

A beautiful young cat began coming to my house in the Fall of 2010, for food and water. From the first time I saw the cat, I knew that I was supposed to watch for him or her. And I did.

The Winter of 2010-2011 was cold and snowy. And there was a long period of time during which I did not see the gray cat. I felt concerned that it might not have survived. But then one day, there it was. And it was looking well fed. Perhaps it had been eating at night. Perhaps someone else was also caring for it. In any event, the cat was surviving. I saw the cat a few more times during the Winter.

Spring came, and the next time I saw the gray cat, it looked like it had lost quite a bit of weight. I immediately suspected that the gray cat was female, and that she had had kittens. One Saturday in May, I was working at the computer, and I felt the need to go to the back window to look for the gray cat. Just as I got to the window, I saw it limping up to the food bowl. It wasn't able to put any weight on its left hind leg. My heart sunk. I contacted PAWS and borrowed one of their traps. On Monday I trapped the cat and took it to Centre Animal Hospital. Dr. Porter examined the cat, and on Tuesday called me with the news: 1) the cat was female and was still lactating - there were kittens somewhere, and 2) the cat's left hind leg was badly fractured and would need a plate attached to the bone - she said that particular surgery could not be done in State College and recommended a surgeon in Pittsburgh. At this point, I named the gray cat Mimi. And while Mimi was kept comfortable, my neighbor and I looked for the kittens, but to no avail. I also made the decision to provide the surgery, and sought someone who could escort Mimi to Pittsburgh at my expense. There was no one. So, I talked with Dr. Porter and we agreed that I would pay for the surgery and escort Mimi if CAH would handle Mimi's recovery at my expense. On Thursday, I called Dr. Chris Runnels, a board certified orthopedic surgeon in Lititz, Pennsylvania (just east of Hershey). Dr. Runnels had done my Maine Coon's bilateral FHO, and she had done a wonderful job. She said she did the plate surgery Mimi needed, and could work Mimi in the next day (Friday). So, I picked Mimi up first thing Friday morning at CAH and drove her to Lititz. I returned to State College. The surgery and immediate post-op care went well, and I went back to Lititz the following Wednesday to pick Mimi up and return her to CAH for further recovery and spaying.

As summer approached, Jackie Petsu, owner of the Stone Valley Pet Lodge, took an interest in Mimi's story and called me at the office. She offered to board Mimi at no charge, and to seek Mimi's admission to PAWS. I have committed to paying any medical expenses directly connected to Mimi's left hind leg, incurred in State College or with Dr. Runnels in Lititz, PA., during my lifetime.

January update: WOW! Despite her dicey beginning, major surgery and a plate in her leg, this gal is a player! Wands, laser dots, balls, mice....you name it, Mimi chases, leaps, pounces, and carries her toys around in her mouth, telling her new foster mom all about them with her meows. She's still tiny physically, but her spirit is huge! Mimi frequently seeks out FM when she's at her desk, making herself quite comfy and content on FM's lap. Mimi always was the social butterfly at the Center...sounds like she's also a lap cat in the making!

Murtle

Murtle

Murtle's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female - spayed, domestic shorthair, FeLV+
DOB: 2/1/2004

A sad, scary beginning for this little gal - found along the side of Rt. 45, motionless, nearly expired from dehydration. But the angels were watching over her, and she was spotted lying there by a man who happened to be a friend of a PAWS volunteer. The man stopped, scooped up the fragile kitty and rushed her to the home of his friend who took her directly to the nearest vet hospital. "Murtle" (so named because the plan was that once/if she recovered, she'd be fostered with a PAWS cat named "Turtle") was in bad shape all around -- severe dehydration, vastly underweight, a nasty respiratory infection....and FeLV+. :( But such a VERY sweet and determined gal, despite it all, Murtle recovered quickly from the URI, began gaining weight within days of having a few good meals, and after a short stay with a foster, was adopted by two former PAWS volunteers! Happily the angels hung around long enough to see sweet Murtle well, safe and secure in the arms of her very own lifetime angels. :)

Paul

Paul

Paul's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 4/18/2011

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea,
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee....
No, kitten Paul isn't Puff and he isn't a dragon and he doesn't live by the sea! But if you remember Puff, then you're old enough to remember 1960's folksingers Peter, Paul and Mary after whom Paul and his siblings were named. You see, the kittens' foster dad loves folksingers and dreamed of being one...so when he had an opportunity to pick a theme and name three kittens...:)

As their namesakes did at one time, kittens Peter, Paul and Mary have gone their separate ways, Peter and Mary now living happily in homes of their own. While handsome Paul hoped to "frolic in the autumn mist" with a new forever friend, winter is just around the corner and he's still waiting!

Paul has a ton of energy and is a very happy cat. Whereas many cats prefer to be a one and only, Paul has become so used to a household full of cats, he would be lonely without company. When not playing with his friends, he loves rolling around in catnip, or stalking squirrels, chipmunks and birds (from the sunporch). Although not a lap cat, he's very affectionate and lets foster mom carry him like a baby. And such a proud fellow, Paul holds his tail so high that it lays parallel to his back! If you live in "a land called Honah Lee"....or even if you don't....you won't go wrong adopting the last of the fantastic Folksingers.

Posha

Posha

Posha's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female-spayed, Domestic shorthair

DOB: 7/1/2010

Posha's foster mom has this to say about this elegant young tortie:

"Posha is an easy-going girl with a very sweet personality. She adjusted quickly to our home and has become best buddies with our one-year old male cat.  The two of them play chase and wrestle with one another as if they were siblings. Posha sometimes chases our elderly cat but she is not aggressive.  I think she would do best in a household with other cats or possibly dogs (although she has not been exposed to dogs).

Posha is somewhat shy with strangers, but she adjusts easily. She purrs quickly when you pick her up and has never scratched or bitten, so on that score I think she would do well in a household with gentle children. But she does not tolerate excessive holding or restraining....which could be difficult for a young child to understand. Posha is a lap cat though, when she wants to be, and will curl up at the bottom of your bed and sleep with you. She is smart, quite verbal and has a very sweet meow. Want a cat with neat litterbox habits (not the excavator type)? Posha may be the one for you!"

Come to the Center and meet delightful purrin' Posha!

Prince

Prince

Prince's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, declawed, Domestic shorthair

DOB: 3/8/2000

"I'm known as Prince Charming in the Kingdom of PAWS, and I'm trying very hard to live up to my name with an instant purrrr when someone pets me. But what, you ask, is a charming, middle-aged Prince doing in a fiefdom for the homeless? Sigh...I guess you'd say I had a mid-life crisis. You see, for almost 11 years, I happily shared my castle with my human family, a cat and a big, easy-going dog. But then, enter the commoner...another dog. Suffice it to say, the commoner was nothing like the dog I knew, my regal existence fell into disarray, and my fall from grace began. I must tell you that I ended up engaging in behavior that was unbecoming of a Prince and eventually, our doc said "decision time...cats...or commoners?" Well, the commoner stayed, my feline friend found another castle, and I went into exile.

So here I am, pretty scared of what's to become of me. I'm a good Prince and please don't let my age put you off. I'm still young at heart and am spry enough that I jump to the very top of the cages when I want to get a good look around. Especially, I vault up there to keep my distance from this lady called Ms. Coconut, who looks so much like me to the casual eye that they put a black collar on me to tell us apart. Although a bit insulting, it's okay...Coconut can be snotty sometimes, so I don't want to be mistaken for her.

I now live in a foster home during the week. I like to sit atop a nice recliner there - brings back memories of having a higher station in life. There are a couple of street urchins in the family but I haven't really met them yet. They're feline urchins, though, so after a few obligatory hisses and growls, I suspect we'll be okay. I'm sure the queen of the castle will let you know more when we all get to know each other better."

Punxsy

Punxsy

Punxsy's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 5/18/2011

If you live anywhere in the U.S. where winter means cold, ice and snow, you've probably heard of Punxsutawney. "Punxsy" is the western PA town where, on February 2 of each year, a raucus crowd of thousands descends upon Gobbler's Knob to see a rodent named Phil hoisted from his burrow to forecast the weather! Which will it be....6 more weeks of winter? or spring is on the way? Such silliness. :)

PAWS' Punxsy is one of six "Gobbler's Knob" kittens, the second litter in the 13 cat rescue mentioned above, and so named because when the kits were first seen under the volunteer's shed, she thought they were baby groundhogs! No groundhog is handsome Punxsy! On the contrary, he is a very affectionate kitten who loves to be held and is quite comfortable on a lap. Like most kittens, he loves to play, the laser dot being his favorite, and like all of the others in this rescue, Punxsy lives amicably with a dog and other cats.

Shelley

Shelley

Shelley's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female-spayed, Domestic Shorthair

DOB: 06/01/09

For a long time, I kept a rather low profile at the Center, preferring to stay in my foster home rather than trotting back and forth to the Center every weekend. Since sitting in the back corner of a cage isn't a good way to get adopted, the PAWS folks decided I should stay at the Center during the week...maybe get used to the place. So now I share one of the Sunrooms with two other gals and two guys. Having shared space with many other cats in my foster home, I get along well with my roommates and am becoming more and more comfortable with visitors as time goes on.  I may shy away at first, but once I know you're "okay", I'll come around for soft talk and pets.

What I REALLY want, of course, is for someone - maybe you? - to take me home and love me. If you come visit me (now don't confuse me with Minnie - we look sort of alike, but I'm bigger), you'll find that I really do love attention. Please give me a chance. --Shelley

Socks

Socks

Socks' Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female-spayed, front-declawed, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 8/28/2004

Across the aisle from her just-a-little-braver brother, you'll find another great-looking tuxedo all dressed for the dance. Yup, you'll probably find Socks curled in her litterbox, ready to greet you with the same low growl you heard from Boots. Socks is very shy and timid initially, moreso than her brother. In fact, she runs to Boots when she's scared and seems to depend upon his presence.

Like Boots, though, Socks loves affection once she warms up to her environment. She does get nervous when being picked up, so she's not quite ready to qualify as a "lap cat". But she enjoys sleeping on her foster's bed with Boots, and has become SO attention-seeking she's starting to wear her foster out! Like her brother, Socks is a well-behaved kitty (uses her box faithfully and has never tried to get out of the house). Socks likes to play and especially loves to chase the "laser dot"! Although her foster has never seen her around children, we can assume she'd be intimidated at first, but probably would adjust over time and do equally well in a quiet, adult home or with a family. She definitely would be happiest if she could stay with her brother!

Please look past the scaredy-cat countenance and the quiet growl  and give Socks (and Boots) a chance to tell you who they really are.

They could not be named for anything or anyone other than famous swimmers! Whiskers

Whiskers

Whiskers' Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Male-neutered, Domestic shorthair
DOB: 10/1/2008

"Here's lookin' at you, kid."

Meet winkin' Whiskers, a somewhat shy fellow, lookin' at you with his one beautiful green eye. Whiskers' perpetual wink is the result of an old injury which led eventually to the surgical removal of his left eye. Winkin' Whiskers has no problem at all being a one-eyed kitty. But presumably because of his injury or the lingering effects of the surgery, he prefers that you not pet him around his head....at least not until he gets to know you and no longer suspects that you're up to no good!

Whiskers came to PAWS from another rescue organization with his two friends, Dalevue and Big Boy (Big Boy has since been adopted). Although all three were fully trusting and responsive to their caretakers of the past year, it is taking them awhile to adjust to the Center and the many new people they meet every day. If you don't see Whiskers when you first go into his Sunroom, he's probably stowed away in one of several safe places in the room. But day by day, he's getting braver and more curious about visitors, so sit on the floor, call his name, and in the wink of an eye Whiskers will come out to look you over. As his courage continues to build, Whiskers will become a fun-loving and gentle companion.
