Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

"Amazing" is truly descriptive of this wonderful girl. Here is what she told us when she came to PAWS:

"My name is Amazing Grace, and I am a 3-pawed calico. Not sure what happened to my right front paw, but it's not there. I found my 'foster family' (the family who brought me to PAWS) by just showing up on their porch. They checked around the neighborhood, but no one claimed me. I am very lovable - I love adult people, kid people and dogs. My porch mates included a beagle, a golden retriever and a yellow lab and we all got along just fine. I lived in the doghouse on the porch, but on occasion, I was allowed in the house to lie on the rugs with the dogs. My 'foster family' took me to the veterinarian who told them that I'm spayed, so that means someone used to care about me. I now have my rabies and distemper vaccines and was dewormed. The vet estimates my age at about 3 years. My foster family fed me well, but winter is here and I need someone to keep me indoors, love me and give me a warm home to call my own. Please help me...."

Amazing Grace is missing about 1/3 of her right front leg, but disabled she is absolutely not. When she walks, she paddles with the pawless leg and that appears to give her good balance. After the standard week in isolation at PAWS, volunteers allowed Grace to come out of her cage. They turned their backs and in a nanosecond, Grace was GONE. No one could find her anywhere! Of course, no one thought to look up.....like high up, on top of the cages where we stack carriers and miscellaneous paraphenalia. Sure 'nuff, Grace finally was found ....way up there, lying peacefully in the base of a disassembled dog crate. Assisted back to floor level, Grace immediately scaled the side of a cage to the very top, presumably just as she had the first time. Not only is this girl amazingly independent and physically capable, but she is amazingly gentle, loving and uncomplaining. You must meet truly Amazing Grace

Badger and Spartan's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Spartan (left): male, DSH
DOB: 8/21/04

Badger (right): male. DSH
DOB: 7/15/04

Spartan and I are two of the male "mascot kittens." Since the little guy already has been adopted, we'll just talk about me, okay? I'm really BIG compared to Spartan and Nittany - actually, I'm a month older than they are, but even so, I may grow into a pretty big fellow. I'm very strong for my size and age. Like Nittany, I'm still frightened of things going on around me, but I'm getting used to it a little more quickly than she is. I'm helping her though, and really would like to go wherever she does so I can keep an eye on her.

There's something about male tabby cats, so they tell me - we have a reputation for being very smart and having calm, gentle dispositions. We're the "greeters" in the household, the ones who make everyone feel at home. The PAWS folks tell me they think I'll grow up to be like that. I hope so - that's kinda my style already. And you know, if my name means anything, the Badgers (football team) were big winners this year - this ought to make me a winner too! Right? Two great mascots in your very own home! Sounds right to me.

Boogaloo

Boogaloo

Boogaloo's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

"Boogaloo" came to PAWS with this silly name, but what a perfect name it is. The guy's a boogaloo alright - the Energizer Bunny in cat clothing! The volunteers love him to pieces. Boogaloo goes non-stop. He's fearless, even of the big boys. He's Spidercat - leaps tall buildings, occasionally missing the mark, bringing the "building" crashing down upon himself and anyone, human or cat, unlucky enough to be in the way. But as in the movies, Boo picks himself up, dusts himself off and away he goes....leaving someone else to clean up the mess. Yet surprise, surprise -- you can pick up this clown, turn him upside down and carry him around like a baby! He goes limp in your arms and just hangs out there, catching his breath before the next romp.

You want a fun-loving, funny, but totally affectionate cat? Boogaloo's your man. He'll make you laugh, make you cry if you don't "catproof" your valuables until he grows up, and he'll provide you with hours of free entertainment. He plays fetch, but his favorite toy is a fishing pole with...nothing fancy...just bread ties on the end. Boogaloo is 1-year old, neutered, and (we promise) will eventually outgrow his sometimes devilish high energy. He's shown the side of himself that he'll become as an "adult" and it'll be worth the wait. Boogaloo is smart, outgoing and beneath it all, a lover. He may try your patience for a time, but you won't regret opening your home and heart to him in the end. He's gonna be one great cat!

Buddy

Buddy

Buddy's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Domestic Shorthair, Male-neutered

DOB: 10/17/04

This endorsement from the woman Buddy found to help him says it all!

"Buddy, it seems, was tired of being hungry and lonely and was determined to find his forever home by taking matters into his own hands. He crawled into the engine block of my car in State College and rode home with me to Port Matilda. Luckily, I heard him calling out from under the hood of my car and, with the help of my two friends, rescued and took care of him until PAWS could take him to help him find his forever home.

We know that Buddy appreciates all that we have done for him; his fleas and ear mites are gone; his belly is full; and he’s warm and safe. But I don’t think Buddy knows how much he’s impacted our lives. He now has a permanent place in the three of our hearts. And it is only because of allergies that I could not be Buddy’s forever home.

Buddy is a love cat, plain and simple. If you do not want a cat who loves to be held and petted; have his belly rubbed and his neck scratched – if you do not plan on spending time holding and loving him, then Buddy is not for you.

If you are looking for a companion; a cat who loves to play and then loves to curl in your lap and stretch out his front legs while you rub between the pads of his feet and purr so loudly you think the next door neighbor can hear him – then Buddy is your guy!

We were blessed to have him in our lives. You'll be blessed to have him in yours."

Callie

Callie

Callie's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

TIME TO MEET THE REAL CALLIE!

CALLIE is an absolutely lovely, spayed calico born in August 2000. A former PAWS kitten, Callie is a victim of "moving". She is very unhappy at the adoption center and demonstrates her dislike in behaviors that can be offputting to a potential adopter. She is very protective of her small space and may growl, swat or nip at what she perceives as an intrusion. But this isn't the real Callie!

Callie has had a couple of vacations from the center, so we know what a wonderful companion she will be in a home of her own. Oh, she has a few little quirks, but who doesn't? E.g., she likes to play in her water bowl, which can make quite a mess, but even this behavior is diminishing with time. At first, Callie hadn't a clue about play. But soon she was chasing feather toys, rolling with a catnip pillow and leaping into the air after her "cat dancer." Sit in a lazyboy and Callie's on your lap faster than you can blink. "Finally," she says with ever grateful eyes, "someone has time for me." She'll put her paws on your shoulders, nuzzle your face, then settle in to knead your lap and purr you to sleep. Being the smart, gentle lady that she is, Callie always keeps her claws retracted as she performs this nightly ritual.

It's been obvious to the PAWS folks that Callie doesn't fancy other cats, so when she went to a foster home with a baker's dozen cats in residence, the intent was that she'd have her own room away from the maddening crowd. Curiosity got the better of her though, so after awhile, she was introduced to the family and does just fine! Aside from some mutual hissing, Callie just keeps a respectful distance and when others get too close for comfort, she simply retreats to the safety of the window seat in "her room." No aggression whatsoever, either from her, or towards her.

Callie is a sweet and loving cat who has been at the PAWS Center for almost a year. This is much too long. She needs a permanent HOME!
(Arrangements may be made to meet Callie in her foster home or mid-week at the Center when it's quiet).

We're the "Spice Girls," Coriander and me! Uh, oh, we know what you're thinking...U.K.'s No. 1 naughty girls, right? Wrong! We're neither naughty, poshy nor scary. A bit sporty? Well maybe. But no spicey, dicey behavior here. We're very nice Spice Girls. We come from a big family. Rosemary was "Mama Spice" and she and "Baby Spice", a.k.a. Nutmeg (the tiniest of our siblings), found a good home together. Our other sister, Sage, and brothers Saffron and Curry Spice were adopted too, so it's just us, still waiting for the right family to come along.

We really don't understand why we haven't been chosen, 'specially since everyone tells us how beautiful and how sweet we are. We're in a foster home now, and foster mom just loves having us around. Mornings and evenings we're typical lively kittens who love to run, wrestle with each other and play with our mountain of toys. But we also crave the attention of our human mom, so in the afternoons, we curl up together on foster mom's lap and snooze there for as long as she'll stay put. As you can imagine, we've become great buddies and are keeping our tails crossed that we'll be adopted together. Put some spice in your life....adopt not one, but two delightful Spice Girls!

Clack

Clack

Clack's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

male, DSH, DOB: 3/14/05

CLACK and his brother CLICK (named after the "car talk guys" in Thursday editions of the Centre Daily Times) came to PAWS when they were just one month old. They had been abandoned on West Aaron Drive, just a hop, skip and a jump down the road from Wiscoy Pet Food Co.....where Clack recently spent a few weeks as visitor in residence. CLICK was adopted some time ago, and handsome, funny, fun-loving CLACK hopes his turn will come very soon. He's an active little fellow, sure to keep you on your toes...but his other side is gentle and sweet. Clack looks you straight in the eye and purrs....you know he's communicating something VERY, VERY important.... if only you could understand "Cat"!

Because of CLACK's sometimes rough and tumble approach to play, he would do best with another kitten his own size or bigger, an adult cat or perhaps a cat-friendly dog. He's met lots of dogs at Wiscoy and seemed pretty nonplussed by the whole experience!

Connie

Connie's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Sweet. Smart. Silly. Curious. Clever. Chatterbox. Snuggler when Play is done. This dear little girl is everything you think of when you think "kitten." Oh yeah, she's cute too.

Connie and her siblings were named for TV personalities. Carson (Johnnie) and Cokie (Roberts) have been adopted, leaving Connie (Chung) lonely and a little confused. "What IS it with me?" she wonders. "First, they named me Cronkite (Walter), but I'm a girl for heaven's sake....anyone could have seen that." (Not always easy, Connie, not when you're real little). "So I survived the sex/name change, but then my brother and sister were adopted and now I'm alone. Why them and not me?" (Maybe, Connie, it's like Red's mom says.....save the best for last!). "But then I hear that I'm going to live with my sister Cokie - her family is going to adopt me too! I got so excited, but Cokie's family decided they can't afford two kittens so I don't get to go there...oh sigh."

Our Connie's pretty disappointed at the latest turn of events, but it hasn't sapped her energy or enthusiasm, her love of play and her insatiable desire to be with her person(s). She loves to help pay the bills, work on the computer, read the paper - but she's never a nuisance. When you've had enough of the cute stuff and really must get to work, Connie understands and finds something else to do. When nighttime comes, settle back in your easy chair, doze off a bit and wake to find Connie snuggled beside you, motor running a mile a minute. This is what you want in a kitten, right?

Cuddle Bug

Cuddle Bug

Cuddle Bug's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Hi! My brother "Smoochy" and I were born in mid-October, and heaven only knows exactly what happened to us and when. It wasn't very kind, I'll tell you that. In December, we were found in a dumpster and were very, very lucky to spend the holidays hanging out at a foster home with two other cats, wonderful foster parents and their 18-month old daughter. A few days ago, brother Smoochy was adopted and I was left behind. I miss my brother a whole lot, but at least I'm in another foster home, making new human and feline friends.

I love to cuddle under a couch during the day and in the evening come out to play. Of course, I used to do this with my brother, so I'm having to learn a few new routines. I'm a shy little fellow, but I was starting to come out of my shell when all this change took place once again. I might hiss a little if you get too close, but it's just because I'm scared. Those who know me say that "my bark is worse than my bite." Honest, that's what they say....I thought only dogs barked! All I know is that once someone ignores my "bark" and starts petting me and loving me and cuddling me, I understand why they call me Cuddle Bug....I purr and purr and purr! I would love to find a home of my own like Smoochy did....preferably one where I have someone to play and cuddle with. Please consider adopting me. - Cuddle Bug

Daisy

Daisy's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

"Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do.

I'm half crazy, all for the love of you!"

Dear little Daisy is one of 100 cats rescued over the past several months from a vacated Centre County home. Best guess is that she was born last spring but is very small for her age. She certainly has a model's figure - tall, slim and leggy - and she demonstrated star potential as a "radio personality" when she was featured in PAWS' weekly spot on a local station. She yakked with the show hosts the entire time....something no other cat has ever been willing to do!

Having gone through so many scary changes in recent weeks, Daisy is still testing her trust in people. She can be quite vocal when she's confused about things, but she loves to be petted and is surprisingly talented at various play routines. Being picked up is still rather stressful. "Heaven only knows what this person's going to do with me now," she must be thinking. But she's settling in to her new foster home much quicker than you might expect given her rather bizarre life so far. When she hides, it's only for a short time and wherever she is, a teaspoon of canned food will bring her on the run. Daisy's a sweet, sweet girl who, with time and a little patience, will blossom into a beautiful and loving companion.

"We won't have a stylish marriage. I can't afford a carriage.

But you'll look sweet, up on the seat of a bicycle built for two!"

PAWS note: When Daisy is adopted, she MUST leave the Center in a "carriage." No bicycles please.

Dolly's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

"Oh, you beautiful doll...you sweet, sweet beautiful doll.
How I want to put my arms around you.
I could never live without you."

Gosh, where do you start with all of the nice things there are to say about this wonderful little momcat?

Dolly spent her first two months with PAWS at a foster home in Philipsburg. There she gave birth to five kittens and raised them well. Only Otis, now four months old and getting to look more and more like Mom, remains.

Dolly was spayed July 12 and went into another foster home to recuperate from her surgery. As soon as she got out of the carrier, zoom...under the bed she went, very unsure about her new surroundings and all of the other cat and dog scents on this new foster mom. It was four days before she felt comfortable enough to come out, but it was worth it....scratches behind the ears, great food, a big soft bed to lie ON rather than under, two scratching devices, and...best of all...air conditioning!

Foster mom couldn't have asked for a better houseguest. Dolly is quiet, loving, seeks companionship, is tidy with her litterbox and food dishes, and doesn't run around at night when people are trying to sleep. She goes into her carrier without a fuss and doesn't seem to mind riding in a car. Dolly is putting back some of the weight she lost taking care of her family, and now deserves a forever home where she'll be appreciated for the sweetness and kindness she shows for others. Come to the PAWS center and meet Dolly....you may just want to "put your arms around her" and take her home!

Eagle

Eagle's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female, DSH, DOB: 2/17/04

Not a very feminine name for a very sweet female kitten, pretty Eagle and her 7 siblings(!) tested positive for FIV antibodies from their mother when they were 8 weeks old. They were placed in a foster home for four months, then retested and found to be FIV negative based on their own immune system development. As an extra precaution, however, Eagle and her brothers and sisters should be retested for a final time at the age of one year. For this reason, we would prefer that they are adopted by families with no other cats for the time being. Eagle is a beautiful cat....gorgeous to look at, inquisitive personality, active and playful, yet smaller than her brothers, Tom, Lancer, and Spirit (who has been adopted). These kittens were named after types of jet aircraft! "For heaven sake, why?", you might ask. Because of how quickly they tried to "take off" when their foster mom entered or left the room where they had to be isolated from the other household cats....for four long months. At PAWS, we affectionately refer to them as the "Jet Babies".

Ginger M

Ginger M

Ginger M's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

I'm Ginger M. The "M" stands for Momcat...also that you won't confuse me with PAWS' other Ginger, sister of Lillian. I was little more than a kitten myself when I gave birth to Bittie and Cupcake, but I learned my responsibilities quickly and did a pretty good job with them. Enough of it though - I'm out of the mom business now and oh so ready to go to a home of my own!

Being just a year old, I still love to play. Kids are great to play (and sleep) with, and other cats are too. I enjoy being near people of all ages and, unlike so many other cats, I'm always looking for a good lap. I like windows and high places too, so give me laps, windows and a perch way up off the floor and I'll be one contented puss.

Oh, but a bit of advice from foster mom: A large, deep litterbox -- perhaps a covered one-- will spare you some grief. I'm a real "excavator" in the litter. With my long legs, I tend to throw it out onto the floor. Humans, for some reason, don't like this. They also don't like, or perhaps don't understand why I sometimes "cover up" my food. Weird, they think - that's what cats are supposed to do with the stuff in the box, not with their food! Hey, I'm just telling you that a) I've had enough, thank you, or b) I'd really prefer something else. A heavy bowl will at least keep me from overturning it and making a mess.

Please come and meet me!

Love, Ginger M

Gip

Gip

Gip's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Meet GIP...as in "The Gipper". And what a whipper-do (that's kinda like a whippersnapper) our Gipper-do is! Six-month old Gip is a kitten's kitten...boundless energy, has been known to get in a little trouble now and then, but just when you think he'll never tire out....he does. He practically collapses in your arms, belly-up like a baby, or in his "house" with his head nestled snugly against his teddybear. You want to run for a camera and capture the idyllic repose for eternity....or at least to remind you of the moment when he's up and running again.

In all seriousness, Gip is a wonderful little guy. A character to be sure, but very, very smart. The person who falls in love with him will be lucky indeed. Our Gipper would really enjoy having a playmate around the same size (if not the same age) as he is. At the moment, there's no one like this for him to pal around with at the Center. He can be a little rough with the tiny kittens, so when they're frolicking about, off to jail the poor Gipper must go. He does not like this. Please come and meet our Gip while he's still at this wonderful stage of his life. Take him home and be ready to laugh at his antics, cry (just a little) at his misdeeds, and cuddle him in your arms.

Update: "The Gipper" was recently neutered.

Haunna

Haunna

Haunna's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Dear, sweet Haunna will haunt you. Just try meeting her, having her climb into your lap (she not only loves this but insists upon it!) and leaving the Center without her. You won't be able to get her out of your mind. You'll be haunted. You'll be back!

Haunna is a beautiful, silken-coated, 3-1/2 yr. old spayed tortie. She came to us from a loving family who very sadly had to part with her because of allergies. Despite having had a very good home, Haunna adapted to being at the Center probably faster than any cat we've ever had. Her family left in tears, Haunna looked around and said...."well, I'm not sure what's going on, but this place and these people don't seem too bad. I'll be okay." Given our more common experience with huddling, shaking, totally stressed out displaced cats, Haunna has been amazing! We should hire her to give comfort and counsel to others!

Haunna is SO very affectionate...she likes to "help" with whatever you're doing and grab a lap whenever the opportunity presents itself. She needs to go home with someone who will give her the attention she craves and which she returns in kind. Someone who works from home or a retiree would be ideal. Other cats are fine. Haunna's cool with everybody. Do come and meet pretty Haunna....you will fall in love. You won't sleep 'til Haunna's sleeping by your side. Click below for an update on Haunna.

Hazel

Hazel's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

You just adopted the tiniest kitten from the animal shelter, but in the blink of an eye you have a full-grown cat! Yes, kittens do grow up fast and some of them grow to be very big.

Then there's Hazel...PAWS' perennial teenager. At the ripe old age of two, this little mom of three (who's now permanently out of the baby business) looks no more than a kitten herself. She's so very dainty and petite, and by far one of the sweetest, most gentle moms ever to grace our adoption center. You can't help but fall in love with Hazel. The kids all have been adopted -- having pretty much the same temperament as mom, they were snatched up quickly -- so now it's mom's turn to find her forever home. Choose Hazel and your cat will remain a kitten, or at least look like one, for the rest of her life.

Jager's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Spring is just around the corner! Welcome Spring by welcoming ME into your home! My name is Jager (pronounced "yah-ger"), but known as "JJ" by my foster mom. Winter wasn't very good to me....I was left out in the cold on Christmas Eve when my person moved away and left me behind. It's hard to believe someone would do that, but it happened. Luckily, a kind neighbor took care of me and saw to it that I got to PAWS. I'm a sweet, gentle, easy-going, 3-year old, dark tortie, up-to-date on my vaccines and spayed. Although I appreciate the time and attention foster mom gives me, I desperately need a lifetime, caring home of my own....one where I can be the only cat. You see, I've tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)....sometimes called "feline AIDS" I'm perfectly healthy now, and chances are I'll live a long, healthy life, but I MUST be kept indoors and, to be safe, I should not have contact with other cats unless they, too, are FIV positive. That's all I ask of you....otherwise I'll be totally undemanding and will give you lots of love in return. I can NOT transmit the FIV virus to you or anyone in your family, and I cannot transmit it to a dog or any other animal except fellow felines. Think sunshine and flowers, think Spring....think JAGER! Java

Java's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

One would never guess that behind her sleek and powerful presence lies a shy personality. Unlike her best friend Latte, Java prefers to stay out of the limelight. Java is quiet and reserved. Let Java tell you in her own words what she is like; this is what she had to say when we interviewed her....

I am very shy around humans and cats. I would like to go to a home where there is not much frenzied activity. I need to feel secure and it will probably take me a few months to get used to my new surroundings. My new mom and dad will have to be patient. My foster mom does handle me, but I still have a hard time staying in her arms for a long time. I do like being petted, but I need to smell you first.

I am a very neat person and will nestle into a warm place to make it mine. You hardly will ever hear me since I am not the showy type. I don't get overly excited about playing, but if you entertain me I do appreciate company.

Thanks for listening,

Java

Junior Miss' Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Such a sweetheart! This pretty 5 yr. old dilute calico comes across as very shy when you first approach her, but she loves to be petted and talked to softly, and has just moved to an "up front" house at PAWS so that she's more visible and better able to pick out her new owner! JM was a favorite of the golf course staff at a local resort and had become the matriarch of the numerous cats living in a maintenance shed there. She is very friendly and would come running to her friends as soon as she spotted them. She's a little unnerved in the adoption center and takes to high places when she's free to be out and about. We suspect she'll do the same in your home until she knows you're okay and feels safe with you. Junior Miss probably wouldn't be a good choice for a home with small children because of her shyness, but a quiet couple would be ideal. JM could fill your empty nest!

Keno

Keno

Keno's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

My name is Keno. I'm a petite, one-yr. old, spayed female brown tabby. In my "past life", I was a very young mom who was retired from parenting with a medal of valor, having battled fiercely to save my family from a horrible death. You see, someone dumped us -- yes, just threw us out! -- behind the PAWS Adoption Center on one of the coldest, snowiest nights in January. No one knew we were there until the next morning when one of my babies escaped our makeshift nest, ran to the front door of the Center and pawed frantically to get inside.

The staff of the vet hospital next door saw him and tried to catch him, but he ran away. A trap was set and almost immediately, "Bingo" was in it. The PAWS folks had no idea how many of us there were or where we were, but set and monitored their traps for 10 days, then gave up. I was too scared to venture into one of those things, especially with three kids in tow. On the 11th day, though, one of my dear little girls could withstand the cold no longer and froze to death on a mound of hard-packed snow behind the Center. Even though she was gone forever, the volunteer who found her named her "Roulette". Victim she was of a very cruel spin of the wheel. The traps came out again, and two days later, I knew I had to take a chance. "Come on, 'Cassie','Reno', we've got to go in. At least we know we'll get one decent meal." Cassie tagged along, but Reno was too far behind and wham! The door slammed shut and Reno ran for cover.

The happy ending to this miserable tale is that Reno was secured the next day, all of us were remarkably healthy, and my three remaining kittens found good homes very quickly. But I'm still here! After this ordeal, which I won't forget anytime soon, I'm a little shy, but these PAWS people saved us after all.....so I know I can trust them. I'm not real sure about other humans though - consider those who did this to us. But I'd love to give someone a try. Please come and meet me at the Adoption Center. I'll give you a chance if you'll give me one. -- For an update, click below.

Khloe

Khloe

Khloe's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Dear friends - My name is Khloe. I was a teenage, single mom with nowhere to go and nothing to eat when some nice people saw me and my little family and called PAWS. I weighed just a little over 4 lbs, and had 5 other hungry mouths to feed. I looked and felt pretty terrible. I don't really remember, but I might have been hit by a car or something, because I was blind in my right eye and had nerve damage which made it impossible for me to blink (my vet called it "Horner's Syndrome"). That's all better now, and as you can see, I've grown fat and sassy thanks to PAWS and my foster parents.

I'd sure love to have a home of my own though.....maybe a place with lots of windows for me to look out of (my favorite pastime)...or a kid who likes to pet me and rub my belly (that's a dog thing, I know, but it feels SO good!). As my son, Red, already told you, my foster family has 5 other cats and 2 dogs, so I don't mind if my new home is kind of busy. I'm an easy-going girl and all is well so long as someone rubs my chin. I have all my claws, but I'm pretty agreeable about using a scratching post. I keep a very tidy litterbox....my gosh you had to with 5 babies! If you have a place in your heart for a gentle, loving, life-long friend, please consider me. - Love, Khloe (now 2 yrs. old and spayed)

Kitsy

Kitsy

Kitsy's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Kitsy, Kitty, Kitty, Kitsy....how to tell them apart? At first glance, it's hard, but their very different dispositions tell the tale. Kitsy is a black/brown tabby, about 10 months old and recently spayed. She wandered into a State College apartment on a cold wintry day, shivering, hungry and looking downright awful from a skin allergy caused by last year's crop of fleas. She was playful but timid, and desperately in need of good old-fashioned TLC.

At the PAWS Center, Kitsy has an approach/avoidance personality. She wants attention, but she either dislikes or fears other cats so much that even the slightest smell of "cat" on a hand reaching in to stroke her can upset her. Interestingly, she does much better outside of her cage and, in fact, readily seeks attention and basks in it. Knowing that she's free to move away if a cat or kitten approaches probably makes the difference.

In her foster home prior to and following spay surgery, Kitsy was very well-behaved and low key. She was quite satisfied staying in her room alone, but was right there ready to make figure-8's around foster mom's legs when she came to visit. Kitsy loved being picked up and petted, but she became instantly fearful if foster mom moved too fast or, again, if she detected that another cat had been in close contact. We have no idea what may have happened in Kitsy's past related to fellow felines, but she's told us unequivocally that her definition of a happy home would not include other cats or young children who, by nature, would move too quickly for her liking. Kitsy is a very sweet, loving and "low maintenance" little cat. She is very neat with her litterbox and keeps herself and her surroundings immaculate. The key to Kitsy's heart....in addition to a calm, easy-going environment and no feline companionship is....Fancy Feast! She loves it! Because of her temperament, declawing would absolutely not be in Kitsy's best interests.

Kooleo

Kooleo's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Meet one Kool Kid! "Kooleo", known to some volunteers as Kool Leo, was born on the 4th of July 1995, but in no way does this big handsome guy show his age. Kooleo has had a rough go of it, having been abandoned in a box by his caretaker for reasons unknown. He was so distraught his first few months at PAWS that he hissed and growled, baring a set of chompers that definitely got everyone's attention! For weeks, though, no one really saw him...he hid under anything available and we just guessed that the lump under the covers was the Kool Kid.

Finally, Kooleo is beginning to live up to his name and become....well, really Kool. He's blossoming into a more self-assured fellow who first came out of hiding, then out of his cage, and now shares a favored woolen blanket atop another cage with Peek-a-Boo. He looks forward to visits from his special friend, Richard, and takes every opportunity to stroll around the Center meeting other cats...and stealing their food!

The Kool one still hisses and bares those teeth occasionally, but only when his incredible sixth sense tells him that the hand reaching out to him is going to haul him back to his cage. "I'd rather not, thank you just the same!" Kooleo is front-declawed, so swatting or scratching is not an issue. He is well loved by all the volunteers, but needs to get into a lifetime home with someone who will never, ever toss him out again. Because he still has a way to go in regaining his trust in humans, he'll do best with an experienced cat person who'll let him continue his "comeback" at his own pace. If you're that kind of person, please give Kooleo a second chance at a good, kool life.

Call my baby lollipop

Her kiss is sweeter than an apple pie...

Of course, if you remember the Lollipop song, and particularly if you remember who recorded it and when, you're dating yourself! (Answer at the end).

She loves to kiss me til I can't see straight

GEE, MY LOLLIPOP IS GREAT!

Our dear Lollipop is a 6-month old medium-haired, dilute tortie. We know very little about her background, but somebody did something right with her somewhere along the way....maybe her mom? She's outgoing yet easy-going, SO soft and affectionate you just want to scoop her up and take her home. Lolli will be spayed before she leaves PAWS, but come see her right now - she won't be with us long.

Nighthawk's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Female, DSH, DOB: 2/17/04

Not a very feminine name for a very sweet female kitten, pretty Nighthawk and her 7 siblings(!) tested positive for FIV antibodies from their mother when they were 8 weeks old. They were placed in a foster home for four months, then retested and found to be FIV negative based on their own immune system development. As an extra precaution, however, Nighthawk and her brothers and sisters should be retested for a final time at the age of one year. For this reason, we would prefer that they are adopted by families with no other cats for the time being. Nighthawk is a beautiful cat....gorgeous to look at, inquisitive personality, active and playful, yet smaller than her brothers, Tom, Lancer, and Spirit (who has been adopted).

I'm one of four "mascot kittens" as we are fondly known at PAWS. I'm the only girl mascot, and I have medium to long light brown hair with cream-colored markings. I'm about 6 months old and still pretty shy, so I'm looking for a quiet, caring home with someone who is willing to help me gain my confidence little by little. Since brother Spartan already has been adopted, I'd really like to go home with the Badger. Although we're not siblings...he's about a month older than me...we came into PAWS together and I feel much more secure when we're together. Peek-a-Boo, I see you. But if you don't look really hard, you won't see me! Sitting high on my perch in the PAWS Center, my domicile draped with thick cushy towels, I watch the world go by, still not sure whether I want to be a part of it.

You see, I've been pretty much on my own for over three years. I used to have a home, and I'm not sure what happened except that I ended up left out in the cold. A wonderful retired couple I just happened to wander up to tried their best to find my owner, and when no one came forward, they made sure I had food, outdoor shelter, and someone to talk to. Sadly, they could not offer me their home because their own animals would have no part of it. After a very long time on the PAWS wait list, finally I made it into the Center. As you can imagine, being inside and having so many people, cats and kittens around is a pretty doggone scary experience for me.

I'm about 6 years old, maybe a bit older. Guess I was spayed once upon a time. I really do love it when someone pays attention to me and reaches in to pet me. I roll over, nuzzle, purr and butt my head hard into your hand. One of these days, they tell me, I'm gonna roll right off the "shelf"! If only I could find the courage to come down....I'm sure once I do, I'll find that everything will be okay. I'm a really sweet cat, desperately in need of a forever home of my own. I'm sure it won't take me long to get comfortable. Please come meet me.....better yet, get me off this perch and take me home!

Red

Red's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Hi! I'm Red.....not to be confused with Redford, who was recently adopted. Redford is actually red and I'm not red, but I'm Red. Good heavens, what's this silly goose talkin' about, you say? Well, it's that Redford has a red-colored coat, and while I'm named Red (only the people who named me know why), I'm a brown and black tiger. Come to think of it, my nose is kinda reddish....maybe that's where "Red" comes from. Anyhow....I'm told that my coat is "soft like a bunny" and that I'm very, very handsome....so all that must be good.

My mom's name is Khloe. Her picture is just below mine. Mom had two daughters and two other sons who already have been adopted. This makes me feel terrible, but Mom keeps telling me it's because you save the best for last. Yes! My foster family has five other cats besides Mom and me, plus two rambunctious dogs, so I've learned to get along pretty well in a crowd. I like humans too. I'm not quite as outgoing Mom, in fact, I tend to be a little shy at first. All the people coming and going at PAWS especially make me nervous. But I warm up easily when things quiet down and then....I'll be your best friend, I promise! I'm about 9 months old, neutered, have all of my claws and really would like to keep them. I'm not at all destructive to furniture, carpets, draperies, etc., but I need my claws to "kill" my catnip mice, which I'm very good at. Take me home and I'll show you how it's done! -- Red

Redford

Redford

Redford's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Hi! I'm Redford....not to be confused with Red, son of Khloe. Red isn't really red, but I am....got that? Let me explain. The guy named Red is actually grey (with black stripes for good measure) and me, Redford, I'm the redcoat...er, the one who's red. Whew....confusing. Red and I, by the way, aren't related in any way. I don't even know who MY mom is. My brother, though, is Sundance, who's really Redford.....but that's a story for another day. My brother can tell you about that.

I'm a 6-7 month old, neutered male tabby (redford tabby that is!), and my middle name is PLAY. Oh, how I love to play! I'll play with anybody - kittens, cats, even humans. You have a laser pointer?! That's my favorite. My foster mom says I'm a bit shyer than brother Sundance, but I'm getting over that. I'm very affectionate, gentle, and I use my claws only on my approved scratching devices. I'm not destructive at all....as you know some kittens can be. I'm reliable in using my litterbox, but to make foster mom....and a permanent mom or dad....happy, Sundance and I would like to have a BIG box....none of these tiny things you can't even turn around in. BTW, I'm really fond of my brother, and we both would very much like to be adopted together.

Rum Tum Tugger

Rum Tum Tugger

Rum Tum Tugger's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Ooooh...what have we here? On first inspection, pretty rough-lookin' dude. Enormous neutered, manx mix, brindle red tabby with an absolutely hilarious stumpy tail. Have to wonder about the "manxness" of this tail...or whether the other half of a regular tail just "went missing" somehow! From what we hear, "Rummy" has had a pretty challenging life. In any event, it certainly does give him character! Rum Tum Tugger came to us with the rep of having unmercifully harassed other cats in the neighborhood where he was found, so volunteers weren't too quick either to stick a hand into his house or, heaven forbid, to let him loose in the Center.

But how looks can deceive and reps can be...well just that. Our roughneck is a pussycat! A little frightened at first, but receptive to attention in an "ah this is the life" way. "I may be only two years old or so, but hey, gimme a fire and I'm ready to retire."

Now...DO we take the chance of letting the big guy loose? Sign on cage says he doesn't like to be picked up, so what are the chances of securing him again if he causes trouble? Gotta do it sometime, so.....out he goes. To our utter astonishment, "Rummy" trotted straight over to the playing kittens, lined 'em up and proceeded to bathe them! In turn, the kittens followed their newly-found "dad" everywhere. Our own Mary Poppins! Indeed, RTT was as gentle as could be. For the record, he did NOT relish the idea of going back to his house and demonstrated to us how elusive he was to the neighborhood folks trying to catch him. A little canned tuna for a lure...and yes....he consented to being picked up the final few steps to his door. Stay tuned for more on Rum Tum Tugger as we get to know him better. Have a feeling he's gonna be special!

Salome

Salome

Salome's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

She's Princess Salome, stepdaughter of Herod the King. At a young age, she learned to dance, and her dancing so beguiled Herod that he offered to give her anything she wanted. She asked for the head of John the Baptist. Eewwh!

She witnessed the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Some believe she was a sister to the Virgin Mary.

She's the subject of a once controversial play by Oscar Wilde, which was banned in Britain because Salome was (gasp!) ... just a tad too passionate :)

She's been drawn by artist Aubrey Beardsley. Salome would not like these drawings.

Her story has been told in opera (Richard Strauss, 1905) and in film.

She's a belly dancer! According to her website, she performed on the Gypsy Caravan Stage in Benita, Oregon early this month.

She's SALOME (pronounced Sah-Loh-MAY)....and she's sitting in a cage at our very own Adoption Center, waiting for someone to appreciate her beauty, her talents, her incredible history and her one-of-a-kind tail. We won't describe the tail - you must come and see it for yourself!

Salome is a lively girl, wanting to dance with you, to be stroked by you, and to follow you wherever you go. She keeps her dancer's legs in shape on her scratching post (without being nagged to do it) and in her litterbox (hint: get one with a lid). And yes, Salome is very sweet - rest assured, she will not ask for anyone's head!

(Salome was born in January 2005 and has been spayed).

Sebastian

Sebastian

Sebastian's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

"My, what big feet you have, Sebastian!!"

"The better to knead you with, my dear."

"My, what long whiskers you have, Sebastian!!"

"The better to tickle you with, my dear!"

"And ooh... what bedroom eyes you have, Sebastian!!"

"The better to ogle you with...while I knead you and tickle you and purr you into submission, my dear!"

"Now.......pass the treats!!"

Sebastian is a strikingly handsome, 3-year old hunk. He's polydactyl, meaning he has extra toes on all four feet. And his sexy eyes tell it all - Sebastian's a lover. He enjoys being held and curling up on your lap...but not always. He'll knead away with those enormous feet...but not always. When he does, never, never does he use his claws! Trimming all those nails could be quite the chore, but Sebastian's foster mom just holds him and clips away....no fuss, no objection whatsoever. No, Sebastian doesn't really have long whiskers (we made that up), but he does have a long, thick, uniquely two-toned coat. "The more for you to brush, my dear!" Fortunately, he loves a good brushing, as he needs it almost daily to maintain his stunning good looks (a groomer's "rake", to reach the undercoat, is almost a must).

Big as he is, Sebastian seems to think he's a kitten. He loves all toys, especially fishing poles with feathers on the end, and he'll meow a sweet, kittenish meow when he wants your undivided attention. He's tried to be friends with the other cats in his foster home and would dearly love to play with them, but the three girls are a bit intimidated and hiss to shoo him off. Gentleman that he is, never...at least not within hearing distance of foster mom...has Sebastian hissed or growled back.

Sebastian responds to his name and likes when people sweet talk him, but he also knows the word "No"....usually. Your bed will be his, so no need to buy him a special one. "And please," he implores, "don't put me in a room by myself. I need space and I desperately need companionship."

Shawnee's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Meet 2-year old Princess Shawnee, mother to Iroquois, Navajo, Cherokee and Mohican. All of the papooses have found loving homes of their own, so now it's time for foster mom to tell you about the kittens' wonderful mom.

"With a spring in her step, Shawnee runs to greet me and accompanies me wherever I go. She attempts to carry on conversations with her sweet, low-volume "murmurs". Should we separate, she will call out to find me. Gentle and affectionate, Shawnee enjoys being petted and likes to butt your hand with her lowered head. She's not big on laps, but you can coax it sometimes, so she may eventually learn that a lap is a pretty nice place to be. Stuffed mice and tethered jingle bells are her favorite toys.

"Watching her raise her four beautiful kittens, you couldn't ask for a better mother -- watchful, ever grooming, patient as they climbed on her, always available when they were hungry, playing with them as they romped. With her ever-pleasant disposition, Shawnee will be a wonderful companion to whomever adopts her."

Shirley's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

This must be the Year of the Tortie! We've had more torties at PAWS over the past year than ever before. Shirley came to us by way of a local kennel. Exactly how or why she ended up there we don't know. Shirley is a beautiful 2-year old dark tortie with captivating eyes and an incredibly sweet disposition. When she arrived at PAWS her figure was svelte, her coat silken. But alas, as time went by, Shirley pulled a "Renee Zellweger" on us! Renee, as you may know, is the actress who made headlines by packing on pounds (and taking them off again) in order to play the role of Bridget Jones. Our Shirley has followed Renee's example in order to play the role of shelter cat....besides, what else is there to do all day long in a shelter but eat? To shed those extra pounds, Shirley must soon find someone to love her, not by stuffing her with food, but by controlling her diet and providing her with daily exercise (interactive toys are great for this).

Shirley is a tidy, laid-back, friendly and inquisitive girl who gets along with other cats after appropriate introduction. If you're a tortie lover, Shirley is perfect!

Sundance

Sundance's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

And I'm Sundance. I presume you've already read about the Red/Redford name game - if not, scroll back up and see what I'm talkin' about. Now...to make things even goofier, I'm supposed to be Redford's brother. But I'm really Redford! Or... maybe Redford is me? You get this one, don't you? I'm sure you do if you're old enough to remember a young Robert Redford as "The Sundance Kid." Redford (Robert, that is) even named his fancy ski resort after the Kid....or I'd rather think he named it after me 'cept that I wasn't born in time.

Enough of this nonsense. I'm PAWS' "Sundance Kid", a 6-7 month old, Robert Redford-handsome medium to long-haired red tabby. Redford, the cat, IS my brother and, as he told you, we really want to go to the same lifetime home. We've come through thick and thin together - a very ignorant, unkindly thing having happened to us before we ended up at PAWS. We grew very close and would be most unhappy to ever be separated. Like my brother, I'm very affectionate - love to be held and cuddled, probably a little moreso than Redford does. We both love to play and are very well-behaved in all respects - litterbox use, scratching where we're told to scratch, and on those few occasions when we get out of line, we understand very well the meaning of "no". Want two handsome, "wonderful cats" (our foster mom's description)? Here we are waiting for a wonderful new life to begin.

Tanner

Tanner's Bio at the Time of Adoption:

Revised 8-03-03: I'm da MAN! An in-charge kinda guy, I need space, freedom, and would be happiest in an indoor/outdoor home...provided the outdoor part is safe for me. (PAWS has brochures on "cat fences" you might want to look at). I'm 3-years old and have been cooped up in this adoption center for over a year. I was a really good guy when I first came here, but after several months in confinement, I got a bit owly, moody...whatever. The longer I'm here, though, the more the "good kid" is showing himself again. I have a chronic skin allergy of unknown origin, but I do well on a special diet...which I really don't like very much, so I drive the volunteers nuts trying to steal everyone else's food!

Once I get de-stressed in a good home and with a person who understands my needs, I think the allergy AND my still occasional unpredictable behavior might just go away for good. I have boundless energy, love to play by myself and with people, and I can be a very, very nice and funny fellow. In fact, I provide comic relief to Center volunteers every day! I'm desperately looking for someone to give me a chance -- if you're an experienced, patient cat person who enjoys challenge and all its rewards, please stop by and ask to meet me. No children please, no small apartment....and unless we have lots of room, I'd prefer to be your only cat. Help! -- Tanner
